Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
